National Home Security Month 2021

Home security tips

Every October, we are proud to take part in a series of events that highlight the importance of home security. October is National Home Security Month so this feels like an opportune moment to share information about how you can use the event’s excellent resources to protect your home, family and possessions.

What is National Home Security Month?

The idea of National Home Security Month (NHSM) was created back in 2013 with the aim of offering advice, information and support for people around the UK on matters relating to their home’s security.

As the nights start drawing in, burglaries and opportunistic crimes like bike theft start to increase. Unfortunately, there’s no way to be 100% sure that nothing bad will happen, but taking simple steps can greatly reduce the risk.

Locks: the main focus for 2021

There are a series of events and information released during the month but we know locks are going to be a primary focus for the event this year,

Lock snapping is one of the new ‘trends’ in burglary and involves using particular tools to break locks. This method can also be used to gain access through uPVC doors without breaking glass. The NHSM guide to lock snapping helps you to understand how this crime works and what to do to prevent it.

Another area of focus is the British Standards for locks and other security. We often talk about the standards for locks on windows and doors such as the Kitemark – but how many homeowners understand what this all means? Get the inside information to better understand these important standards and you’ll not only be more secure, you could also get a discount on your home insurance.

What can you do for NHSM?

We will keep you up to date on the latest information, tips and advice from the month but what can you do now to start making sure your home is as secure as possible?

One of the best things to do is to look at the locks on your windows and doors. These are a crucial part of your home security and they need checking and servicing regularly. If you need a second pair of eyes to inspect them, give us a call to book a complimentary audit.

If you are feeling a little uncertain having returned to work and find you are coming home in the dark, security lighting could be the answer. It doesn’t need to be expensive but it helps you feel more confident as the dark nights roll in.

Protecting your home

Home security is an ongoing project and National Home Security Month is a great opportunity to focus on key areas and make sure your home is as well protected as possible.

If you need help with your home or business security, please contact us for a no-obligation security audit. Stay safe!
