Research shows that at least 58% of all new homeowners don’t change their locks. This means that over half of all people who’ve moved don’t know who has access to their new home.

How Many Keys to Your House Are in Circulation?

It’s not only the previous owners who may still have keys. If you don’t know how long ago the locks were changed, the owners before them might still have access. And the owners before them! They could even have given keys to family members, tradespeople or friends.

Could Your Insurance Policy Be Affected?

Neglecting to change your locks can affect your insurance. Steve Foulsham, head of technical services at the British Insurance Brokers’ Association, says: “A policyholder does have to demonstrate that they have taken reasonable care. And they could be asked to prove that they have done this with who has access to keys, resulting in an awkward conversation with their insurer. Changing locks when you move in to a new property is certainly something which we would advise.”
In other words – if you don’t change your locks, and your property is burgled, your claim might be invalid.

Is it worth the risk? Considering your house is probably the most expensive purchase you will ever make, it’s worth investing in new locks.
