None of us think it will happen to us. I have a friend I’ve known for a few years and he knows what I do for a living. Burglars broke into his home last week while he and his family were sleeping and stole the keys to his van and then stole his van which he uses for work every day. Even he didn’t think to ask for my FREE advice to check his home security, so it can happen to any of us.
I never like to scare people but an important part of my job is to help raise awareness. Can you imagine waking up to discover someone had been inside your home while you and your family were there, sleeping? You would be literally terrified beyond words, wondering what would have happened if someone had woken up and gone downstairs while burglars were in the house. You would feel like your safety had been compromised. You may feel worried and apprehensive every time you go back into your home or even be unable to sleep for a while, wondering what every noise could be. Luckily in my friend’s case, it was only possessions that were taken.
Unbelievably, in the same week I had a call from another friend, who lives locally in Greenwich. He was out one evening and his wife and two children were at home. His family were upstairs and heard a noise, which sounded a bit like the cat’s litter tray being scattered across the floor. His wife went downstairs to check what had happened and was confronted face to face with a burglar about to enter their home. Luckily the burglar ran off before any harm was done. My friend’s wife was inconsolable, frightened more than she has ever been and will never feel the same about their home. In fact, she now wants to move house. Incidentally, the noise was where the burglar had been jemmying the patio doors. The pressure applied had completely shattered one side of the double glazed door.
Burglars will often damage, destroy or steal sentimental items just for the sake of it, not because they can sell them. In my blog post Securing the things that are Precious to You I talked about the sentimental value of personal items that actually cannot be measured, or in fact replaced.
Please don’t think it won’t happen to you! It happened to over 84,000 people in London between April 2013 and April 2014 according to the Metropolitan Police Crime Figures. Over 3,000 were in Bromley and over 2,800 were in Greenwich, just two of the areas we cover. I get so many calls from people after they’ve been burgled, when it’s too late. I’d much rather come in before it happens.
