7 Home Security Tips When You Move Into A New House

New home security

When you move into a new house, it’s important to take some time to secure it properly. You don’t want just any old person having access to your home and all of your belongings! Here are 10 home security tips for when you move into a new home.

Why new home security matters

Moving home is often a stressful experience, involving upheaval and a large amount of organisation. I’m moving to Essex at the moment having lived in London for 30 years, so this is a subject very close to my heart right now!

Changing the locks should be one of your first priorities, as this will provide you with peace of mind knowing that nobody else has access to your home or possessions. My advice comes after hearing an unfortunate story from one of my clients. They were taking a leisurely bath in their new home when a previous owner came in downstairs! As you can imagine, this was quite an unsettling experience that could have easily been avoided if they had changed the locks straight away.

7 tips for new home security

1.  Get to know your new neighbourhood

One of the best things you can do to ensure home security is to get to know your new neighbourhood. Talk to your neighbours and get a feel for who lives around you. This will help you notice anything suspicious and will also allow you to create a network of people who can watch out for your home when you’re not there.

2.  Get an alarm system

Alarm systems are a great way to deter burglars and give you peace of mind when you’re away from home. There are many different types of alarm systems available, so be sure to do some research to find one that best suits your needs.

3.  Change the locks

When you move into a new home, it’s important to change the locks on all of the doors. You never know who might have a key to your old home, so it’s better to be safe than sorry. Many hardware stores will re-key your locks for a small fee, or you can always hire a professional locksmith to do it for you. Don’t forget outbuildings and window locks as well.

4.  Install motion sensor lights

Motion sensor lights are another great way to deter burglars and make your home more secure. These lights will turn on automatically when someone approaches your home, which will startle intruders and make them more likely to flee the scene.

5.  Keep valuables out of sight

It’s also important to keep any valuables out of sight. If burglars can see items like TVs or computers through your windows, they may be more likely to break in. Instead, keep these items in a room that can’t be seen from the outside or in a safe that is bolted to the floor or wall.

6.  Join or start a neighbourhood watch programme

Neighbourhood watch programmes are a great way to get everyone in your community involved in keeping an eye out for crime. These programmes typically involve neighbours taking turns patrolling the area and reporting any suspicious activity to the police.

7.  Stay aware of your surroundings

Finally, it’s important to always stay aware of your surroundings. If you see something suspicious, don’t hesitate to call the police. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Boosting your new home security

By taking the steps listed above, you can help to ensure that your home is as secure as possible. Whether it’s changing the locks, or joining a neighbourhood watch program, these tips will help make sure your home is safe and help you settle in quickly.
